Who is this website for?
Image Quest Marine is a commercial picture library, representing photographers who specialise in aquatic wildlife and related subjects .
Everyone is welcome to browse our collection of images but we would remind you that the copyright in all our photographs is retained by Image Quest Marine and our contributing photographers. Photographs may not be reproduced, copied, stored, or manipulated in any form or by any means without our prior permission. For further details, please see our Copyright Notice.
If you are interested in using our photographs in print, online or electronically, please Contact Us to discuss your licencing requirements and agree a reproduction fee.
Registration
Why register?
The Image Quest Marine website holds thousands of photographs for you to search and select for your projects. To make the most of the tools and features available on our website you need to register online.
How do I register?
Registering couldn’t be easier - simply go to our Registration page and fill in your contact details. You will be asked to read and accept our Terms and Conditions for using the site. To explain how Image Quest Marine will use and protect your personal information we have also made our Privacy Policy available.
On registering your details, you will acquire a basic account level. Once the Image Quest Marine team has reviewed your form and considered your picture buying requirements and your purchasing history with us, you may be assigned to a higher level of account.
Levels of account
Basic
This level permits you to access:-
- Lightbox feature: allows you to compile selections of images for review later. You can create multiple Lightboxes for different projects, rename them and edit your image selections. Lightboxes can also be emailed to colleagues or clients for consideration.
- Quote Request: a simple way for you to contact us for a costing on the use of images you have placed in your shopping cart. You can view your Quote History on your ‘My Account’ page.
Intermediate
In addition to Lightboxes and Quote History, you will be able to:-
- Download Layout images: 1200 pixel files free to use in inhouse layouts, presentations and proposals. It’s simple - click on the Download icon below each Thumbnail and Preview image.
Advanced
Available to clients with full account approval (which will usually mean a purchasing history with Image Quest Marine):-
- High Res Download directly from the site – no waiting and no advanced payment required. Image Quest Marine staff will be alerted to the download and will follow up on usage details and invoice the appropriate fee.
- Order History accessed under My Account, allows you to view all the images you have previously downloaded.
Searching for Images
There are many ways to dive in and explore our huge collection of marine images:
Quick Dip
Just type your keywords in the Quick Search box at the top and bottom of each page and the website will return all the images that match.
Looking Deeper
Our Advanced Search page is found under the Search drop down menu, and gives you a number of options including location, common name, Latin name and specific phrase searches. You can also search for animals or plants by taxonomic classification.

Lost at Sea
If you can’t find what you are looking for or would prefer us to do the searching for you, our knowledgeable picture researchers will be happy to help and will be able to search the photographs awaiting uploaded to our website. Contact Us by phone or email, or you can simply fill in the Request a Search form and we will get back to you.
Search Tips
AND/OR Our Quick Search Boxes are automatically set as AND searches e.g. a search for “dolphins sharks” will only return photographs of dolphins AND sharks together. If you want to the search engine to apply an OR search or to search for a specific PHRASE, use the Advanced Search page and choose the relevant option.
STEMMING Our search engine employs stemming e.g. if you type “star”, it will pick out sea star, stars, starfish, Featherstar, Starry Octopus, starting etc. This will affect you if:
- you are searching for a regular noun e.g. “dolphin” will pick up both individuals and groups of dolphins
- if you are searching for a regular verb e.g. “play” will also pick up playing, plays etc
- if you are searching for a word with multiple meanings e.g. “surf” will pick up waves, surfers, surfboards, surfing etc
- if you are searching for a word that appears as part of other words e.g. “fish” or “sand”
You can use this tool your advantage to widen your searches or if you are unsure of a spelling. However, if you are finding your searches are returning too many images, try narrowing your search by being more specific. The Advanced Search page can help focus your results by criteria such as location, common name and orientation of the photograph.
HOVER IMAGES Place your cursor over a thumbnail image to instantly show a larger ‘hover image’. You can disable this feature by selecting ‘Display Hover’ off in the options bar at the top of each search results page.
PREVIEW IMAGES If you see an image you like, you can view an enlarged Preview image by clicking on the thumbnail. The IPTC Info below the preview image is hyperlinked so clicking on one of the keywords, location or classifications will start a new search returning similar images to that keyword.
ORDERING SEARCH RESULTS
Hits sorts by popularity of image
Rating sorts by visual strength of image
Most Recent sorts by date images were added to collection
Name sorts by image code (which is prefixed by the photographer’s initials) so will group each photographer’s images together and display these alphabetically.
SLIDE SHOW To view a slide show of enlarged preview images click on a thumbnail on your search results or lightbox page and click on the triangle below the preview image. Whilst the slideshow is running, you can still add to or remove images from your lightbox.
Lightbox Tips
Create/Select Lightbox: use the Lightbox page to create a new lightbox or select one you created earlier.
Adding/Removing Images IMPORTANT: when adding images to a lightbox these will be added to your currently selected lightbox (the name will be indicated when you hover over the Lightbox icon). To add an image to a lightbox, simply click on the Lightbox icon below the thumbnail or preview image – the icon will turn blue. To remove an image, just click on the Lightbox icon again.
Managing Your Lightboxes Use the options panel at the top of the Lightbox page to delete old lightboxes, email lightboxes to colleagues and clients and download medium res Layout files for the images in your lightbox.
Ordering images in your Lightbox Click ‘Add all to Cart’ to move images from your lightbox to your Shopping Trolley where you can Request a Quote or Download the high res files (if you are authorised).
High Res Download (for authorised users)
To access a high resolution file, you will need to proceed through 5 simple steps:-
- Place the image in your shopping cart and click ‘Download Hi Res’.
- Enter your contact, billing and project details before confirming your order.
- Read a Warning notice and click to confirming that you have read and agree to our Terms and Conditions.
- Click the blue ‘High Res Download’ button at the top of your order confirmation page to download all the images in your order at once.
- Select ‘open’ in the File Download box to view and save the Zip file containing your images, or select ‘save’ and chose an appropriate location to save the file. You will need to extract the jpg image files from the Zip file – you will need appropriate software such as Winzip to do this.
IMPORTANT: please note that when you download a high res image we will assume that the image is being used and you will be invoiced the appropriate reproduction fee. If you do not have a fee agreement, we strongly advise that you contact us to request a quotation before you download the image. We reserve the right to charge a £10 cancellation fee per image for images you download but do not then use.
Credit Line
In line with their rights under copyright law, the photographer must at all times be credited when their image is reproduced. The credit line should read:
