Lionfish

This month, we are sharing some of our photographers' spectacular images of lionfish. These stunning fish may be beautiful but they are also venomous creatures with an intense, painful sting and voracious appetite. Their stomachs can expand up to 30 times their normal size after eating. Lacking predators, lionfish are an invasive species, decimating about 65 to 95 percent of the endemic small-reef fish in the Bahamas over the last 30 years. Cyprus recently started a cull of lionfish in order to tackle their threat to the Mediterranean ecosystem. Click on any image to browse more lionfish photos from our library.
