Focus on Penguins

Penguin Awareness Day takes place on the 20th this month, so we're celebrating these amazing aquatic birds in our January Monthly Porthole feature. With their short, streamlined feathers and dense bones, flightless penguins are fantastically good swimmers, capable of diving to depths of 250 metres. The gentoo penguin, the fastest of all 18 penguin species, is able to swim at up to 22 mph. While we might commonly think of emperor penguins in frozen Antarctica, penguins actually live in many other parts of the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, Chile and South Africa.
