| Among no group of marine animals is metamorphosis
more spectacular than many of the crustacea and amongst them the most
bizarre story comes from our old friend the lobster, the spiny lobster
and slipper lobsters in particular (Photo. 8). From the eggs that
the female carries beneath her abdomen, hatch small and very flat,
transparent and spindly larval phyllosomas, literally “leaf bodies”
(Photo. 2). So long-legged are these animals, with their long, gawky
stalked eyes, that they always appear cumbersome and inept (Photo.
1). In reality they are dead smart and should take the prize for cooperative
living and long distance hitch-hiking (Photo. 3). |
