The Coronavirus Pandemic and Ocean Pollution

Over the past year, Image Quest Marine photographer Andrey Nekrasov has been photographing the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on our oceans. His images show the devastating effects of discarded disposable face masks and PPE as they contribute to an increase in the planet's plastic pollution problem. During the Covid-19 pandemic, 194 billion disposable face masks and gloves are being used worldwide every month. It is estimated that single-use plastic masks could take up to 450 years to fully break down, if they end up in the sea, with disastrous consequences for the planet's wildlife.
